Introduction - introductie
This blog is not a trail guide. It is about the beauty and the diversity of Curaçao.
There are dry months and wet months, days with wind or storm or no breeze at all.Due to the weather conditions, you may find he trails to be very different from what our pictures show.
Most recent hikes are described in Dutch / Nederlands (kijk voor de laatste wandelingen in het blogarchief). De paden veranderen snel, ze groeien dicht of worden gesloten. Er komen ook nieuwe routes bij.
The other entrees are in English. Our main object is to show the beauty of the island. We cannot always give exact directions of trail heads or ends.
Many trails change, closed by owners, or overgrown. . the maintenance depends on enthusiastic volunteers. Our group tries out new trails too.
Important: never go hike alone! When visiting popular places like the Salt pans of Jan Kok or Ascencion Bay don't get out of your car unless other people are there. Leave money, cards and other valuables at the Hotel.
If you have no one to come with you, take a hiking tour with a guide. Please read the page with tips and info!
Do not touch the Manzanilla tree or its leaves and apples. They are poisonous.
On all photos copyright of the owners.
Enjoy Hiking Curaçao!

Boca Ascencion - St.Patrick - San Pedro - Barber
This Sunday, nobody organized a hike, so the hiking group did not follow a trail.
We went (by car) to the Boca of Ascencion. The dirt road (coming from Willemstad, take a right turn just before the Plantation House) used to be closed, but recently it opened. It brings the visitor to the south side of the Boca Ascencion.
From there one can climb a ladder and walk to San Pedro on higher grounds or along the coast.
From the Northern side of the Boca, one can walk along the coast to Barber. To start, follow a small trail that runs from the South side of the Boca to the other side. (It crosses a field of very green low growing plants at the land's end of the Boca).
Walk via St. Patrick (a rusty old stone crusher is all that is left) to Barber. From there, turn back through an old Hófi (garden) with palms.

Jan Thiel Salt Pans
Because some of our group had knee problems, we took an easy route to the Jan Thiel Salt Pans. Starting at the end of Kaya Damasco, we followed a narrow trail (trailhead is marked by a white stone) to the salt pans. This round hike took us about one hour.
A double "Bol" cactus. Rare on Curaçao, more common on Bonaire.
The Jan Thiel salt pans
We crossed the salt pans, following one of the dirt-roads that lead through the pans.
Waterbirds searching for food.
Pillowed foam, tastes salty.
A flock of parakeet.
A Colombian Parrot.
We walked to the other side of the salt pans and circled back to the trail to Kaya Damasco.
