The hiking group

 No mud this time.

North coast.

Wild waves at the North coast, at Hato

Porto Mari, a short hike around Seru Mateu (the hill Mattheo)

On April the first, we started a short hike along the Seru Mateu. We parked at the parking of the beach and restaurant of Porto Mari.
The first path we took ended in bushes. The path was clearly a wild pig route, since the path was full of their droppings.

 A beautiful and quite trail. Easy too!
Once at the end, there is a wide trail to Playa Hunku.

After going back and trying again, we found the trail we remembered well. It was my first try (with a new hip) for a real hike, so we did not overdo it.
In the distance we could hear the voices of the Hiking Curaçao group that did the long hike (Birdwatch tower, ruins, old wells, and up the Seru Mateu)

These strange balls are all over the trees, no bird-nests ;-)

This is what we call “mondi”. Many trails are a bit like this. 

You’ll have to bend, jump or climb here and there.

Sometimes rain will suddenly pour down.

The hike

Ascencion hiking trails

Coming from Willemstad, right before Plantation house Ascencion, there is a dirtroad, at the right hand side, to Ascencion Bay. (Look for a red and white barrier. Road is open during the day)

Several hiking trails (watch for wooden signs, at both sides of the road) that cross this dirtroad. 

At the bay, there a is parking / picnic place.

Walking back towards the main road, there is a trail at the right hand side that leads to the other side of the bay. From there, a trail leads to the coast, along the bay.

One can choose to hike around the hills and start back to Ascencion, or follow the coast (in the North West direction) all the way to Patrick or Barber.

From the bay, there is also a trail that starts with a wooden ladder. That trail follows the coast (in the South West direction) all the way to San Pedro.

There are round trails in the Ascencion area too. The trails have names, on wooden signs.

Ascencion bay is a great spot for birdwatchers.
