Hiking Curaçao - The Trails: heron

Introduction - introductie

This blog is not a trail guide. It is about the beauty and the diversity of Curaçao.

There are dry months and wet months, days with wind or storm or no breeze at all.
Due to the weather conditions, you may find he trails to be very different from what our pictures show.

Most recent hikes are described in Dutch / Nederlands (kijk voor de laatste wandelingen in het blogarchief). De paden veranderen snel, ze groeien dicht of worden gesloten. Er komen ook nieuwe routes bij.

The other entrees are in English. Our main object is to show the beauty of the island. We cannot always give exact directions of trail heads or ends.
Many trails change, closed by owners, or overgrown. . the maintenance depends on enthusiastic volunteers. Our group tries out new trails too.

Important: never go hike alone! When visiting popular places like the Salt pans of Jan Kok or Ascencion Bay don't get out of your car unless other people are there. Leave money, cards and other valuables at the Hotel.
If you have no one to come with you, take a hiking tour with a guide. Please read the page with tips and info!
Do not touch the Manzanilla tree or its leaves and apples. They are poisonous.

Jan Kok salt pans. Mud and the water level is very low.

You have to walk over the dams to see the flamingos.

Even with a lot of rain lately, the mud is drying fast.

No food. Time for a siesta.

A short hike along the Jan Kok saltpans

At the very end is the Bullenbaai (bay). We did not go all the way, due to sudden rainfall.

We started at the road from Daniël to Willibrordus.

Park along the road and start walking where there is dry sand. It is close to the little deck that is built there to view the saltpans and the flamingoes.

Sometimes there is just a narrow path along the water. But since we did not have much rain this winter, there is a broad stretch of sand.

Follow the car tracks (fishermen are allowed to drive) all the way to the Bullenbaai. Keep the camera ready to shoot flamingoes, herons and other waterbirds. We heard a lot of parakeet, but could not spot them. To get to Bullenbaai takes about 20 minutes.

It is possible to cross the water close to Bullenbaai. Use the pipe and follow the trail along the other side of the saltpans. That trail ends in Willibrordus. It is about 15 minutes from where the car is parked.

Jan Kok Saltpans - Sept 30, 2012

This was before the oil spill. Now there are only two old flamingos around.

And one Heron that shows some traces of oil contact.

While the larger group did the two and a half round, we decided to start at Plantation House Jan Kok, and walk up and down to the Bullenbay, along the muddy trail.

This round-hike took us one hour. It can easily be done with children. Although they probably want to try the pipe, that crosses the water for the hike along the ruins of the Plantation house Rif Marie.
